It seems unlikely just based on the geography of New York City that it would ever be able to become a technology mecca. Although the narrow streets and high cost of living alone makes NYC an unlikely candidate, IBM has set up shop only a few minutes away from the heart of Manhattan. Brilliant minds from all over the world flock to New York City because they believe that they will be able to attain their dreams there. Then there is the infamous saying, “If you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere.” Truer words may have never been spoken, especially since the nearly seven million residents of New York City barely manage to scrape by each month.
None of these hurdles have dissuaded the New York City Economic Development Corporation from trying to come up with new ways to entice new business owners from coming to the city. What New York has that other cities don’t is a plethora of opportunities. All you have to do is to be at the right place at the right time and you can almost write your own destiny. Even still, Mayor Bloomberg believes that technology will help to make the popular city an even more desirable place for manufacturers and develops to come and set up shop. There is an app developer for nearly every street in NYC that painstakingly works on his or her new program, and if Bloomberg has it his way these young innovators will be the start of something big.
